Should I use health apps?
Some claim to cure acne, others identify melanoma. But thousands of health applications for smartphones and tablets launched annually has real benefits for your health?
More than 1,000 health smartphone / tablet applications published monthly. You can use to assess their mood, track your menstrual cycle (to determine the fertile period) and control their blood glucose. Last year, the Department of Health suggests that doctors should start prescribing.
But do not confuse a medical application with your doctor. For starters, they are not regulated - the United States, the Food and Drug Administration has been working on the guidelines, but the UK MHRA regulates medical devices only, which excludes most applications -. And they are of variable quality
can also be harmful. This week, a research article published in the Archives of Dermatology analyzed four applications for smartphones designed to help people diagnose skin lesions as benign moles or melanoma. It has been shown that the accuracy of identification requests were melanoma lesions vary between 6.8% and 98.1%. The best results have been with an application that sends the image directly on the wound board certified dermatologist for analysis. The worst uses automated algorithms to analyze images.
- solution Smartphone applications can be brilliant, but where health problems, you should be realistic. No request yet be cured of a disease. An investigation by the New England Center for Investigative Reporting in 1500 found that health applications, more than one in five said to cure or treat medical problems. Nearly half of his cell phone based on the treatment, light and vibration used another pair chosen. Research, scientists have made it clear that none of these methods could help the conditions under which it was sold.
To use an application health, opt for well-known brands of health (for example, organizations such as the National Health Service, Red Cross, etc.). Surveillance applications of power that are produced by companies of weight loss are often well established. Otherwise, verify that the authors, the frequency of updates and if you reference. Meanwhile, doctors can use applications of decision support, yet more patients. A study of British doctors in 2012 found that nearly 20% of application related to work.
