postheadericon EFF Seeks DMCA Exemption for Console Modders

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) urged the U. S. Copyright Office to renovate and expand the exemptions to the Act Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which were awarded last year in response to EFF to protect certain rights of modding. Specifically, the EFF has played a role in what is legally "jailbreak" smart phones, and the organization wants the DMCA to grant the same freedom of tablets and electronic games.

"A claim presented today, the EFF asked the Copyright Office to protect smartphones from" jailbreak "Tablet PCs and console video games - free to operate systems, operating systems and applications from any source, not just those approved by the manufacturer, "said the EFF in a statement." EFF also requested legal protection for artists and critical to use excerpts from DVDs or downloading of services to create new works, remixed. These exemptions leverage and extend the exemptions that EFF won last year Jailbreakers and remix artists. "
