Microsoft desperately needs a "thing" â?? a

big

something that transcends the world of nerd consumer electronics and realizes hero among the "experts" mobile equipment and civilians. The iPad is one thing. The Kindle Fire is one thing. Each tablet is a common cultural experience that is almost effervescent appeal to consumers in general.

And now, with its surface RT tablet, Microsoft is trying to create their own.
