Samsung Galaxy S4: can eye-tracking work with games?
new reports on the announcement Thursday S4 Galaxy were dominated by one key characteristic: eye-tracking. Is this the beginning of a new era in control of the game?
A fascinating concept for something a void for others, the ability to track the eyes of the new Samsung Galaxy S4 certainly gained wide media coverage. The system, which uses the integrated camera to visualize and interpret eye movements, has been shown to do two things: pause a movie when the user looks away (Pause intelligent), and moving the contents of the screen when the user switches and, uh, look (Smart Scroll). But these simple characteristics show that we are about to enter an era of gaming control eyes?
Well, it depends. I have not been able to find Samsung if the technology is available for developers - which of course will be important. The other question is how sensitive it is. Current implementations are rather binary S4: either the user looks at the screen or not. This could offer
some
feature for game developers: may increase the standard control system (perhaps a break handsfree system) or perhaps for simple - Enter legends, endless corridors. But something more complicated, the system must be able to quickly and accurately track eye movement on the screen.
However, game developers are interested in learning more about technology from Samsung. "What is interesting is that if Samsung takes for an engine API as cocos2d or unity so that we can adapt the game," said Ben Trewhella Games enforceable. "Since the motion tracking and gesture, these new features bring a lot of innovation, but it can be difficult for a developer if you are not made to integrate seamlessly. You can spend 20-30 percent of their development budget trying to implement a new feature interface, when there should be two or three per cent of their time. "
enforceable is a small studio specializing in games "second screen" multiplayer - ie interactive experiences using both shared a TV and a shelf for each participant. They are currently working on Advance Wars title card style collection tactics, but also see the potential for impulsive multiplayer experience. "The games that allow someone to jump right to join a game are great - with eye-tracking is possible to make a lot of games very inclusive in that it can not pass a screen, acknowledge that you're there and Suddenly're in the game - which would mean that you could get four to eight players to play quickly on a screen -. This is very interesting, "
Harvey Smith was a producer at Electronic Arts, but it is now CEO of game company Marmalade platform technology. He also sees the potential for eye-tracking - and requirements for a sensitive system. "The possibilities depend on the accuracy that can be followed in the position on the screen," he said. "It is clear that there are opportunities to develop games with this technology may delegate certain functions and reload a gun in a FPS, with a sense of eye movement in a racing game, or control the camera in a 3D adventure.
- "For young players simple games like" hide and seek "with the characters, or reading eye movements to create feedback can be very rewarding Perhaps most valuable is offside -. By tracking online user's vision in real time can make the game more responsive to the user focuses on - and relaying this information to development studies help inform future decisions design " as vital, the arrival of affordable and pervasive eye tracking solutions could be great news for players with disabilities. "I was predicted that the general public aware systems look like ten years, and I'm glad it started to happen," said Dr. Mick Donegan, chief executive of charity SpecialEffect changing gaming peripherals for gamers with disabilities. SpecialEffect has developed its own application for PC, Alt controller keyboard controls that correspond to different areas of the screen that can be read by the monitoring systems of the eye. This way, you can play to play titles like Dirt 3 racing sim with eye movement only. Compatible Cameras, however, are special products that cost more than ? 3000.
And, of course, Samsung is not only to explore the possibilities of monitoring the consumer's eye. Specialist technology company Tobii, which normally provides its eye gaze interaction and control products in the fields of medical research and is working with Fujitsu tablet eye-tracking. It is also preparing to launch its first consumer product, the Rex Tobii, which aheres your monitor and allows you to use eye tracking to control any compatible application - developers only need to include a special code in their software. CeBIT exhibition last week, the company worked with Intel to show specific gaming applications. Elsewhere Donegan points for the tribe's eyes a company created by a group of graduate students at the University of Copenhagen. After earning a million euros in funding the crowd, the band is currently working on a low-cost eye-tracking control for mobile devices, using only the built-in camera and without additional technology.
