How Google got me into bed with Hitler
Decision Google to kill Google Reader has an impact on all those building a business on the back of Web 2.0 One of the wonders of the online world is the
Downfall
even on YouTube. (For those whose time is too precious to be wasted watching video clips, I must explain that the remix parody is based on a scene from Oliver Hirschbiegel
Der Untergang
Downfall
), which recounts the last days of Hitler in his bunker in Berlin.
The clip is the scene in which Hitler, played by Bruno Ganz memorable, he launches into a tirade about finally realizing that the war is truly lost and overlap with subtitles on current issues or events. So Hitler rants about the iPad's inability to multitask, that Sheffield United were relegated Twitter or left.
What brings this to mind is a new version of the meme appeared last week. In this paper, Hitler spoke of Google's decision to "retire" (waste) Reader application. "What are they thinking?" roared. "How can they do this to U.S.! How dare they take Google Reader. I have more than 300 fonts in there! Have you any idea how much effort I put? Out of all the Google products that spending 99% of my time with the player. Why do this? "And so on.
- For the first time - and hopefully only - time in my life, I agree with the F?hrer. Because I am a dedicated user of Google Reader. The reason is that, like most people who have to maintain a professional look on many sites, I hope RSS, syndication system that sends a summary of the text whenever you add content to a site I can control. To avoid being overwhelmed by the resulting stream, I use a piece of software - an RSS reader - to impose order in the sequence and Google Reader - or rather was - the one I have on the base. Now I'll have to use something else -. And move all my RSS subscriptions to the new service
was particularly good to participate in the world of Web 2.0, including, no doubt, because it is good for your business. But there is a dangerous asymmetry implicit in all of this for anyone building a business on the back links Web 2.0. If the business depends on the continuity of a great team like Google (or Amazon or Facebook) without explicit contractual relationship and the big boys can pull the plug at any time that suits them. And all that remains is a nice message like this in the Google blog saying. "Although the product has a loyal following over the years using both decreased, July 1, 2013, who will retire Google Reader."
But at least in this particular case, users can export their data, including their subscriptions with Google Takeout over the next four months. Users of other Web 2.0 services are not always so lucky and can find those who believe their data to a "free" service suddenly gone or retired.
