Philippines law threatens press freedom
A new "cybercrime" bill introduced in the Philippines has increased penalties for defamation and gives excessive powers to the authorities to shut down websites and traffic control online.
According to Human Rights Watch (HRW), the penalties for online defamation amount to a serious threat to freedom of expression.
HRW Asia director, Brad Adams, said: "The Computer Crimes Act should be repealed or replaced Viola Filipinos rights to freedom of expression and is totally incompatible with the government's obligations the Philippines under international law. ".
