Do iOS 6 users stick with Apple Maps? Snappli reckons it knows...
The application of data compression can see how many people are downloading data services - and therefore monitor the use of Google Maps and Apple. But what is the story?
What happens once the users of iPhone and iPad upgraded to iOS 6 cards and test application? Do you stay with him, or decided - in line with "sorry" letter from CEO Tim Cook Apple's website - do not live
Snappli, what a data compression service for iPhone users (in this sense, it is a bit like what RIM offers BlackBerry users to them) was track of what has happened in the last week, as people started upgrading to iOS 6, and in particular to provide data exchange Google for Apple's own data.
The graph is as follows:
Eldar Tuvey of Snappli said the numbers are:
. 64% of our users in the last week are now in iOS 6 (UK and U.S.) - in fact, 16% upgraded to iOS on the first day
. Before proceeding to iOS6, 25% of users will see Google maps at least once a day
. Once moved to iOS6, who immediately went to 35% of Apple users who use cards
. However, over the next five days falling to 4%
In short, Tuvey said: "Before iOS 6, one in four people have been using Google Maps [daily] after iOS 6, one in 25 are using Apple Cards daily, and that number is down .... "
At first glance, this is quite overwhelming: people are not downloading data via Apple cards. Therefore, they can not be used, right?
Unless there is a confounder: Google Maps using raster graphics iOS 5, iOS 6 graphics cards using vectors (the same format as Nokia and Google Maps for Android like)
frame vector data
The main difference between raster and vector graphics is that raster graphics are a fixed framework - essentially an image - while vector graphics are files that are encoded images can be scaled down or without additional data. There is a cost in terms of CPU to use vector graphics - but the great advantage is that you do not need to download additional data once you tiles
LetWikipedia explains:
vector graphics is the use of geometrical primitives such as points, lines, curves, and shapes or polygon (s), which are based on mathematical expressions to represent images in computer graphics. "Vector" in this context means more than a straight line.
is based on vector graphics formed by vectors (also called paths, or strokes) which lead through locations called control points. Each of these points has a defined position in the x and y axes of the work plan. Each point, well, it is a variety of databases, including the position of the point in the workspace and the direction of the vector (which is what defines the direction of the track). Each track can be assigned a color, a shape, thickness and also a filler. This does not affect the file size of a substantial, because all the information is in the structure, but describes how to draw the vector
The main difference is that Google Maps in iOS 5, because it uses raster graphics, requires repeated discharges. You see when you load a page maps.google.com in iOS 5, then switch the phone to airplane mode - so that the Wi-Fi and data are on - and then try to move out of the page. You will reach a point blank because there is no data.
In contrast, vector graphics cards are used in Apple require any additional downloads. You can confirm this by loading a page (choose your own site, for simplicity), then turn the data connection. Now try to scroll the page is loaded. You will be able to see details in the surrounding area. You can zoom in and out. If you are in a car or train, you should find that you can continue your journey - even plan your route, to a certain extent - with zero additional data. The entire United Kingdom is encapsulated in less than 200 MB, depending on CoPilot.
factor Korea
That was certainly my experience earlier this week in Korea, where Samsung has had a visit from an iPhone with iOS 6, which had no data contract. One night, I saw the highlights of North and South Korea (Apple cards are more detailed than Google does for North Korea, it is just a blank white). The next day, zero data coverage, we took a bus trip to a production Samsung.
- The phone traced throughout our trip, with street level data, including the names of the shops, all the way. And all the way back. And then later at the airport. All this without a single drop of additional data.
and zoom out. The lower edge of the screen is not filled - but after a while ago
approach just to see where we are. Again, this is all done by the vector data included with the original download from last night. .. and again ..
