postheadericon NASA-sponsored study finds lengthy spaceflight can impair astronauts' vision



NASA has long assumed to monitor the effects of space flight on astronaut health, but a recent study commissioned by the space agency is now making the new light on a potentially important view. Although the study involved seven astronauts, all reported that they had suffered some degree of blurred vision while on the space station for more than six months, and some noted that the effects persisted for months after their return on Earth. The study also revealed specific abnormalities in all the astronauts involved, including changes in tissues, fluids, nerves and other structures in the back of the eye. These problems are relatively minor and correctable, but researchers are also taking the findings and work on ways to determine who might be more resistant to these changes, which could be critical of something as long as a three-year mission to Mars.
