Have been many cases where the courts have said that it is acceptable for an employer to be heard (by employer) personal email account. And now there is a case for saying essentially the same schools and universities. As long as the mail system, which apparently no violation of anti-spyware or data protection laws. Certainly understand the reasoning here, although it could be argued that the relationship between a student and a university is very different from an employee and the employer.
