Tim Berners-Lee: demand your data from Google and Facebook
Exclusive:
inventor of the World Wide Web said that personal data held by the line could be used to mark the beginning of a new era of personalized services
Tim Berners-Lee, the father of the world wide web, urged Internet users to the application of their personal data of Internet giants like Google and Facebook to make way for a new highly customized IT services era "with enormous potential to help humanity."
Berners-Lee, the British-born MIT professor who invented the Web in three decades, says that while there has been an explosion of public data available in recent years, people don ' they have not understood the value of personal data held by companies for different sites.
In an interview with The Guardian, Berners-Lee said: "My team has a great understanding of my form, the things I'm eating, where I am on my phone means. In my pocket the amount of exercise I got and how many I've been climbing stairs and so on. "
The exploitation of these data could provide valuable services to people, he said, but only if their computers have access to personal data held by them for web businesses. "One of the themes of social networking silos is that they have data and I do not know ... There are no programs that can run on your computer that allow me to use all data in each of the systems that use social networking and all my calendar data, more in my sitemap work, besides the data in my gym little gadget and so to really provide great support for me . "
Berners-Lee, who was an ardent supporter of "open Internet", said large companies have begun to respond to consumer pressure for user data more accessible Web. Google now gives users immediate access to all data contained in them and Facebook users send their data, although it may take up to three months to recover all.
Once the data outputs from different sites had normalized, he said, our computers would be able to deliver services more and more sophisticated, we are told what to read in the morning. "You will not only know what happens there, but I've read and what my mood, and I'll find it later."
Berners-Lee in the past warned that rising social networks like Facebook, silos and "closed" world applications such as those published by Apple, which can not be indexed by search engines Search the Web, a threat to the openness and universality that the architects of the Internet was seen as central to its design.
said he remained concerned about the effect of monopoly or dominant firms enormous, but believes that the ability of most small businesses to innovate meant that it was unlikely that the giants Web to maintain their current domain indefinitely.
"It's interesting that people throughout the existence of the tape were troubled by the monopolies. Were concerned [about] Netscape have full control over the browser market until suddenly started to worry that Microsoft had full control of the browser market. So I think one lesson is that things can change very quickly.
"Before the Web, Gopher [an alternative to the principles of the World Wide Web] was taken care of all of the Internet, apparently, very quickly. I remember at a meeting of the Internet Engineering somebody said it was incredible. how fast was taken on one of the wisest men have said, "Well, it's funny, it's amazing how people can quickly take something online, but it is amazing how quickly the risk of falling. ""
aa
said Internet users are becoming more aware that web sites that appear to be permanent features of the online world could disappear in a few years. "Whatever the social networking site, where you put your data, you must ensure that you can go back and come back in a standard form. And indeed, if I were you, I do that regularly, as to safeguard your computer ... maybe our grandchildren depending on the site, we may or may not be able to see our pictures. "
Berners-Lee said he was concerned about the rise of the so-called "native applications" such as those produced for the iPhone and the iPad, and not to look. "Every time someone puts a magazine in a current phone and put it on a Web application [a form of open source software] you know you lose a lot of information to the public discourse in general - can not be linked to that if I can not tweet, I can not talk about it, I can not love me, I can not hate. "
- But he said the rapid improvement of Web applications, and its ability to provide the functionality and cunning previously only available from Apple or Android applications become more information on the Internet opened.
In a search light to the Apple ecosystem very restrictive said: "I should be able to choose the applications you use to manage my life, I should be able to choose the content you see and must be able to choose the device that I use, the company I use for my internet supply, and I would like those who go to independent elections. "
